Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is observed by Muslims all over the world as a month of fasting, prayer, and meditation.

It is stated in the Quran that Allah says, “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may develop God-consciousness.” (Quran 2:183)

It is the memorial of Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) first revelation. The annual rite of Ramadan is esteemed as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It lasts for twenty-nine or thirty days. The time is calculated from one sighting of the crescent to the next.

“The month of Ramadan (is the month) in which the Qur’an has been sent down as guidance for mankind containing clear signs which lead (to the straight road) and distinguishing (the truth from falsehood).” (Q 2:185)

Fasting from dawn to sunset is mandatory for all adult Muslims. Those who are not acutely or chronically ill, travelling, aged, breastfeeding, diabetic, or menstruating must observe fast.

The early morning meal is called suhur, whereas the nightly dinner that breaks the fast is called iftar.

Fatwas have been put out declaring that Muslims who live in areas with a midnight sun should follow the timetable of Mecca. However, it is a formal exercise to observe the timetable of the closest country in which night can be differentiated from daytime.

The rewards of fasting are expected to be increased during Ramadan. Accordingly, Muslims abstain not only from food and drink, but also from tobacco products, sexual relations, and sinful behaviour, especially during this month. They dedicate themselves to prayer and recitation of the Holy Quran.

Ramadan is the month in which the first ayah of the Quran was conveyed to the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him more than 1,400 years ago.

Throughout this sacred month, Muslims fast from before the sunrise, or Fajr to the sunset prayer called the Maghreb۔
